He served as the special advisor to the CIA in determining the status of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) & related programs in Iraq. After assuming this position in July 2003, Kay made his initial interim report on Oct. 3, 2003. Since then, he stepped down from this position & was succeeded by Charles Duelfer, a former colleague & member of the U.N. Special Comm. with Kay. Kay volunteered to resume his public service, worked for 6 months in Iraq, & concluded his work a week before this hearing & reported to the CIA.
