Education for Inclusive Citizenship contributes to theoretical thinking on inclusive citizenship education through a detailed and lively account of the different concepts of citizenship held by some of the key players involved, and the extent to which these concepts accommodate ethnic and religious diversity. The book focuses on the policy and curriculum development process of citizenship education in the English secondary school contemporary context, and is based on original first-hand accounts from interviews with the key players involved, including David Blunkett, Sir Bernard Crick, and other high-profile policymakers and those working in the field of citizenship and diversity. Four main models of citizenship underpinned by political philosophy are proposed, and the theoretical and practical implications for diversity of these four models are explicated. Whilst the 'participatory' conception of citizenship emerges as the most dominant conception, Kiwan argues that it does not substantively accommodate a diversity of identities. In response, she proposes an inclusive model of citizenship which consists of two main components: 'institutional' multiculturalism, and a greater emphasis on the relationship between citizen and state. Education for Inclusive Citizenship provides readers with a conceptual understanding of citizenship in a broader policy, societal and global context. It informatively and provocatively illustrates how policymakers, teachers and other practitioners can use and modify the four models of citizenship to realistically promote an inclusive citizenship in practice. Dina Kiwan is an Academic Fellow/Lecturer in Citizenship Education at Birbeck College, University of London, UK.Kiwan, Dina Jane is the author of 'Education for Inclusive Citizenship', published 2007 under ISBN 9780415423687 and ISBN 0415423686.
