SUMMARY

The Niagara peninsula and Kabul, Afghanistan are settings for this exciting novel. It spans thirteen years, from 1959 onward and involves the careers of three orthopedic surgeons, Lindsay Best and Mahmud. In the prologue, a missionary, Dr. Best, operates on Mahmud's foot and returns to North America to study orthopedics. Unknown to Best, Mahmud develops a complication, blames Best and swears to get even. Though he suspects Mahmud has a foot problem, Lindsay learns the details sometime later. Many orthopedic treatments are described and treated at a time when the specialty was evolving into its present enlightened role. The sanguineous Dr. Best, continually making mistakes irritates other surgeons in Shipton, Ontario, until he has temporary restrictions placed on his license. Mahmud studies orthopedics and passes the Fellowship examination. He nowhas several options but an alienation of affection charge curtails his treatment of patients. By a twist of fate, the charges are dropped, unsettling him regarding his future.Blair, E. J. is the author of 'Do Unto Others', published 2003 under ISBN 9780940121751 and ISBN 0940121751.
