The idea for the Orte der Herrschaft-Places of Power project at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Geschichte grew out of a workshop in comparative medieval history at Harvard University. Comparative presentations of Islamic, Byzantine and medieval German palaces suggested the potential interest of exploring a comparative approach in the context of the research program Repertorium der deutschen Konigspfalzen.
