SUMMARY

By examining the major genocides of the 20th Century, this book argues that a set of common elements makes it possible for tyrants, dictators, and ruling parties to methodically destroy targeted minorities. Those elements are stated as a formula: Hatred + Powerful Government + Disarmed Civilians = Genocide. Separate chapters explain how the formula applied in the Soviet Union, China, Ottoman Turkey, Uganda, Germany and Guatemala. The book also examines the relationship of "gun control" ideas to civilian disarmament, and how such disarmament has enabled slavery, lynching, street crime and school shootings. Recent historical events in Japan, Britain and Zimbabwe are linked to the formula as well. Three chapters discuss the positions of Judaism, Catholicism and Protestant Christianity on the question of armed self-defense against aggression. The forthcoming documentary film, Innocents Betrayed, is based on this book. 318 pages; endnotes; indexed.Aaron S. Zelman is the author of 'Death by "Gun Control": The Human Cost of Victim Disarmament', published 2001 under ISBN 9780964230460 and ISBN 0964230461.
