SUMMARY

This volume covers a wide range of issues regarding interfaces in optoelectronic devices. Key is that in many emerging device structures a new level of control is needed to ensure the quality and nature of the interface. In addition, new device structures are emerging that combine unique types of materials where the interfacial science is new. Thus, the interfaces between electroactive polymers and inorganic semiconductors or oxides are just beginning to be understood. The integration of nanomaterials such as quantum dots or carbon nanotubes into optoelectronic composites creates unique new interfacial challenges. The increasing level of control at the atomic level is beginning to yield novel heterostructures, a new level of control of nucleation and the ability to accommodate large amounts of lattice mismatch, or even control the degree of crystallinity in films grown on amorphous substrates. Control of the degree of crystallinity and order of both organic and inorganic materials is increasingly interface-dependent. The papers in this volume represent a snapshot of the current state of the art and understanding in this increasingly critical area of interfacial science. The need to integrate organic, inorganic and nanostructured materials on varying length scales represents a significant challenge for the future and will be a key area of materials science. Topics include: interfaces with organic materials; interfaces with semiconductor materials; interfaces with transparent conducting oxides; and interfaces with novel optoelectronic materials.Ginley, David S. is the author of 'Critical Interfacial Issues in Thin-Film Optoelectronic and Energy Conversion Devices Vol. 796 : 2003 MRS Fall Meeting Symposium Proceedings', published 2009 under ISBN 9781558997349 and ISBN 1558997342.
