SUMMARY

Coretta Scott King knew about dreams. Growing up in segregated Alabama in the 1930s, she endured racist taunts and saw her home and her father's sawmill burn to the ground. Yet music gave her hope. A talented singer, Coretta studied to be a music teacher, then moved to Boston to be an opera singer. There she met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and in 1953, they married. Coretta worked at Martin's side as an activist and performed concerts to raise money for the movement. After Martin's assassination, Coretta carried on their fight for equality. She established the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, and she lobbied to make Dr. King's birthday a national holiday. Coretta worked for human rights around the world until she suffered a stroke in 2005. At her funeral in 2006, she was honored as ?one of the most admired Americans of our time.'McPherson, Stephanie Sammartino is the author of 'Coretta Scott King ', published 2007 under ISBN 9780822571568 and ISBN 0822571560.
