Alfred N. Fowler was directly involved in national and international Antarctic affairs for twenty-five years. He commanded the U.S. military task force supporting the U. S. Antarctic Program prior to his retirement as Captain, U.S. Navy. He served as Deputy Division Director, Division of Polar Programs at the National Science Foundation. After retirement from NSF, he was employed by the American Geophysical Union in Washington where he served as the first Executive Secretary for the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs until October of 1997. Captain Fowler, a Naval Aviator with more than 5200 pilot hours and meteorologist, has been honored by the naming of the Fowler Peninsula, a 100 by 200 mile geographic feature on the coastline of West Antarctica on the West shore of the Ronne Ice Shelf south of the Weddell Sea. His military honors include the Legion of Merit. He is a long time member of the American Meteorological Society, the U. S.
