D. D. Kosambi (1907-66) was educated at the University of Harvard. Trained as a mathematician, he taught at Benares Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University and Fergusson College, Pune, before joining the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, in 1947. His research interests included Pure and Applied Mathematics and Theoretical and Applied Statistics, and from 1940 onward his research in various branches of Indian Studies -- ranging from numismatics and archaeology to text-editing and analyses -- appeared regularly in the form of articles, monographs, and anthologies. Honoured in different ways by academic institutions of the country and outside, during his lifetime and after his death, Kosambi had strong ideological convictions and commitments, an example of which was his deep involvement with the international peace movement Brajadulal Chattopadhyaya is Professor at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New DelhiKosambi, D.
