Volumes 3A and 3B aim to give the reader a short but exciting account of the rudiments of cell biology from a largely chemical point of view. Several important topics, however, such as membrane and organelle biochemistry and cellular signalling are dealt with in later volumes. The problems of enzyme organization in situ, metabolic compartmentation, organelle interactions, and nuclear-cytoplasmic interactions are complex and of such magnitude as to continue to defy solution.
