FROM THE PREFACE: It was noted in the Preface to Volume 8 of this series that rapid progress has been made in most branches of marine chemistry since the publication of the first seven volumes (1975-1978). As a consequence it was decided to change the orignial concept of the book by continuing it as an occasional review series. This would not only serve to introduce subjects that were not sufficiently advanced to merit considerations when the earlier volumes were published, but also to review those well established topics in which great progress has been made recently. It is hoped in this way to provide marine chemists with up-to-date information about the most important areas of the subject.
