Challenging the Barbie Doll Syndrome : A Group Design for Working with Adolescent Girls

From their experiences working with adolescent girls in high-risk middle schools, these counselors were worried that the girls were trying to attain impossible standards of beauty projected by toys and the media, experiencing failure and frustration. They constructed 12 sessions that focus on body image, eating disorders, and self-concept. Each lesson plan includes a step-by-step approach to the session, and suggestions for having the students reflect on their experiences with a journal.
