Catalog of an exhibition held at William Penn Memorial Museum, Harrisburg, PA. John Scholl, a farmer & carpenter from Germania, PA, began carving wooden sculpture in 1907, at the age of 80. Before his death on Feb. 26, 1916, he produced at least 45 pieces of sculpture, of which 42 survive. These range from whittler¿s puzzles small enough to be held in one hand to giant freestanding constructions over 8 feet in height. Twenty-five pieces of sculpture make up this exhibition, along with a selection of family photos & other materials to delineate the influences which shaped John Scholl¿s art. This catalog discusses Scholl¿s unique art & its influences, as well as the history of his family in Pennsylvania. It includes 25 examples of his work.
