Carriers of Culture Labor on the Road in Nineteenth-century East Africa

STEPHEN J. ROCKEL completed his Ph.D. in the Department of History, University of Toronto, in 1997. From 1997 to 1999 he taught economic history at the University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal), Durban, before returning to Toronto where he is Associate Professor of history. His research interests include nineteenth century East Africa, African labor history, urban history, and violence, as well as the culture and ideology of imperialism.
