SUMMARY

Introduction At the turn of the twenty-first century an incredible interest in the early years of the twentieth century and its corresponding Arts & Crafts design philosophy has surfaced. Television programs devoted to showcasing Craftsman and Bungalow homes appear weekly. Several popular magazine written entirely on the topic of restoring and decorating homes in the Arts & Crafts style are currently in print. New subdivisions of "modern bungalows" are springing up all across the nation. Yet, surprisingly enough, not one book is available on how to go about selecting exterior colors for the historic or newly built bungalow. This work is an attempt to bring together the various elements that are necessary to undertake the task of designing an exterior color scheme and bring it to completion. The sections that follow start out by providing some important historical background about the homes of the early twentieth century, where their design inspirations came from, and why they look the way they do. Next follows useful information on Arts & Crafts home styles of the age and their popular exterior colors, as drawn from actual historic period sources. Some basic color theory follows, explaining why some colors generally work better with others and why some don't. The last sections of the book are devoted to practical application featuring original bungalow period colors directly from early-twentieth-century sources and then providing the steps to create your own bungalow color scheme using modern products. For inspirational purposes, the "Before & After" section illustrates what wonderful transformations can occur through good planning and employing a thoughtful process.Schweitzer, Robert is the author of 'Bungalow Colors Exteriors Exteriors', published 2002 under ISBN 9781586851309 and ISBN 1586851306.
