SUMMARY

This book gives graphic information on the story of the family of John L. Lewis whose father, Thomas Lewis, was a coal miner in Wales. Thomas Lewis immigrated to Lucas, Iowa, in the late nineteenth century. He came to Lucas, Iowa, along with the Watkins family from Wales. After settling in Lucas, Iowa, Thomas Lewis married Louisa Watkins & from this marriage six sons & two daughters were born. One of the daughters died at an early age. The eldest son, John Llewellyn Lewis, became the ninth president of the International Union, United Mine Workers of America. He served during the most turbulent period in the history of the mine workers' union. After the 1930s John L. Lewis's leadership brought fame & success to his union which was unparalleled in the labor movement. His leadership spanned a period of 45 years. Mr. Lewis retired as president of the mine workers' union on January 14, 1960 & died June 11, 1969. The author has made a personal evaluation of each of Mr. Lewis's successors, including Thomas Kennedy, W. A. Boyle, Arnold Miller, Sam Church & Richard Trumka.
