The workbook is specifically designed to help students develop critical thinking and analytical writing skills. It contains a series of practical and productive exercises that move from simple to complex. The step-by-step approach assures the success of all students, and grading is minimized because the trial and error aspect of a typical writing assignment has been virtually eliminated. Each workbook also comes with an instructor's answer key. The exercises help writers produce paragraphs using the 1 2 3 method for presenting evidence. We have found that if students can (1) make a claim about a quotation, (2) present the quotation, and then (3) comment specifically on the contents of the quotation to support the claim; they can deal with most other types of writing situations. This form of training is especially helpful for on-demand writing and testing situations. We have incorporated problem-solving principles (intimate engagement, scaffolding, modeling, and repetition) where students produce logical, well-written paragraphs by exploring a simplified version of a complex task. As they progress through the exercises, they gradually take on more of the workload, until they are writing effectively without any help.Pollitt, Gary is the author of 'Analyzing Famous Quotations', published 2004 under ISBN 9780975592304 and ISBN 0975592300.
