James Gilmour arrived in Mongolia in 1870, and spent twenty-one years living among the Mongols of Central Asia, speaking their language, learning about their life. Gilmour was a missionary of London Missionary Society, but wrote in a literary style that was compared to that of Daniel Defoe. Gilmour so entered into the life of the Mongols that they called him "our Gilmour." He rode with them over the plains in summer and met with them in Peking in the harsh winters, slept in their tents, and wore Mongol robes which he considered very becoming. The authenticity of the account is compelling, drawing the reader into the world of Central Asia which is still so little known.Gilmour, James is the author of 'Among the Mongols ', published 2006 under ISBN 9780710311900 and ISBN 0710311907.
