Laurence Yep, a Newbery Honor Award winner (Dragonwings and Dragon's Gate), has written many books about the Asian-American experience, including Ribbons and The Cook's Family (both Putnam). Mr. Yep based The Amah on the experience of his grandmother, who worked as an amah for an American family. According to his own family stories, his relatives' adjustment to their absent mother was quite difficult. Sparked by his interest in the world of amahs, Mr. Yep also interviewed a number of Chinese amahs, children of the amahs and finally, the people who had been raised by the amahs. The result is a story that shows how the lives of all three parties are forever intertwined.
