Dave Wheeler graduated from college as an Industrial Designer and worked as an automobile designer, first for General Motors and then at Ford. His first project at GM Styling was designing their 1955 Kitchen of Tomorrow. He was then assigned to their body studio where the basic car body was developed to accommodate the different divisional designs. In the automobile studios he designed the 1955 Impala coupe and the Nomad station wagon. GM provided an interesting variety of assignments from Euclid earth movers to racing Corvettes. He became the manager of Product Analysis & Planning and wrote many of the proposals for new automobiles. When he made the proposal for the wide track Pontiac he became friends with Semon (Bunky) Knudsen. Knudsen took him to Ford when he became their President. At Ford he designed the 1970 Mustang, set up the Design Research Studio, and ran an advanced design studio where they designed the first digital instrument panel. He was in charge of all the Designer Cars in one of his departments simply because the Designers had no idea what materials were available or what modifications might be feasible. Ford gave him a special retirement after he lost his right leg and he and his wife immediately moved aboard their 50' trawler, Morning Star. They have lived aboard for 20 years and they've cruised from Quebec to the Exumas. He has written for some 15 magazines and a few newspapers. He and his wife live on board at Islamorada in the Florida Keys.Wheeler, Dave is the author of 'After Forty Years How to Avoid the Pitfalls of Boating', published 2002 under ISBN 9781892216441 and ISBN 1892216442.
